If you are in rent arrears, there is a government-backed grant that could help clear your debt and prevent eviction.
It is called a Discretionary Housing Payment, often referred to as a DHP.
Many people do not realise this support exists — and as a result, they struggle unnecessarily.
What Is a Discretionary Housing Payment?
A Discretionary Housing Payment is extra financial support provided by your local council.
You may be eligible if you receive:
Housing Benefit, or
The housing element of Universal Credit
DHPs are designed to help people whose housing costs are not fully covered by benefits.
What Can a DHP Be Used For?
A DHP can be used to help with:
Rent arrears
A shortfall between your rent and benefits
Temporary financial hardship affecting your ability to pay rent
In many cases, councils award DHPs specifically to stop rent arrears from increasing and to prevent homelessness.
How to Apply for a DHP
Applying is straightforward and can be done online.
Step one: Go to Google.
Step two: Type in your council’s name followed by “DHP”.For example: “Birmingham Council DHP” or “Leeds Council Discretionary Housing Payment”.
Step three: Click on the official council website link.
Step four: Scroll down the page and click Apply Now.
You will be asked to complete a form explaining your income, rent, arrears, and why you need support.
Apply Early
Do not wait until court action or bailiffs.
Councils are more likely to help when arrears are still manageable and homelessness can be prevented.
Final Thought
If you are struggling with rent arrears, a Discretionary Housing Payment could provide immediate financial relief.
Search your council’s website, complete the application form, and submit it as soon as possible.
Support may be available — but you must apply.
